Do you enjoy camping, hiking, canoeing, and helping others overcome life's challenges?
If so, Timber Ridge Treatment Center might be the right fit for you.
Timber Ridge is a wilderness treatment center, designed to provide a 12-18 month program that rehabilitates at-risk boys between the ages of 12 and 17. We are located near the Uwharrie National Forest about 15 miles south of Salisbury, North Carolina. The large cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte are all within a 45-minute drive as well.
We currently have openings for our counselor/group leader positions. As a group leader you would live with a group of eight teen aged boys in a wilderness setting for the duration of your shift. You will help the group make their time goals, guide them in problem solving, and lead them in activities and work projects designed to improve confidence and cooperation. These boys are all here to receive help for whatever emotional or behavioral problems they've had in their lives. They receive treatment primarily through the group living process, but also meet monthly with licensed counselors who help them resolve their familial issues.
Group leaders work a rotating schedule consisting of four days on and two days off. Thus, your two days off move back by one day every week. Twice a year, your group will take a 17-day canoe trip in the Southeast, camping out riverside at night and paddling during the day. Our groups also take 5-day hiking trips in the mountains of North Carolina.
This position is salaried, starting at $23,660 per year. Timber Ridge offers many benefits as well, including:
- 10 vacation days per year (which do accrue year to year, and may be cashed in if you don't want to use them)
- 10 sick days per year (which also accrue, but must be used, cannot be resold)
- health insurance and dental insurance
- a $10,000 life insurance policy
- access to our 401(k) plan after a year of employment
- meals and lodging are also provided when you're on shift
If you would like further information, please visit our website www.trtc.net
Requirements
We require our candidates to possess either a four year degree, preferably in a human services field, or some other experience that would help you in the field (military service, Boy Scout training, etc). The nature of the position requires a level of emotional maturity, but we do not require any previous experience in counseling, social work, or child care.
Above all, working at Timber Ridge requires the willingness to help others, the patience to deal with emotionally and behaviorally challenged teenage boys, and the ability to succeed in an outdoor environment.
